Day Two - Favourite Book

I touched on this briefly during the 30 Day Book Challenge (being the favourite book of my favourite series), but let me elaborate a little. I love all of the books very much because they offer new dimensions to the series, expanding on the characters, adding to the world, contributing to the mystery of Harry’s very purpose in life. I love Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire the most of these for several reasons (and those reasons are certainly not limited to what I’ve written here today):

First is because, coming from PS through PoA, it was the first book that really felt like a grown-up book. I started reading Harry Potter when I was eleven, and I don’t think anyone will really dispute the fact that, if you were around when J.K. Rowling started these, and read them as they were released, it felt like you were growing up with Harry. GoF tackles a lot of serious things, and the atmosphere Rowling creates is one where she’s speaking to her readership like she knows they understand. I love Y.A. books that don’t talk down to the audience. When you’re young, you want nothing more than to feel and be treated like an adult. Rowling respects this in her narrative without broaching on topics that were beyond the comprehension of adolescents. As a transitory book, it is absolutely exceptional.

Second is because of the complexity of the plot. It is intricate and exquisite. I think we all knew that there was shit going down with Mad-Eye, but the revelation that he was Barty Jr. in disguise still sends me into convulsions. Holy effing smokes. Beyond that, how the plot was pieced together had the real feel of adventure, but predestined adventure different from the first three books where Ron, Harry, and Hermione were just sort of running amuck. There’s structure and anticipation to it. The story/school year is distinguished by more than just the the Hogwarts Express, Christmas, and June. We also get to see and somewhat comprehend information outside of Harry’s exposure to it. It’s very exciting to know more than the POV character when he is your main source for knowledge in the story.

Thirdly is the expansion of the wizarding world through the Quidditch World Cup, and the Tri-Wizard Tournament. I loved, loved, LOVED seeing different facets of magical existence, and the big community feel with everyone together. It was a very human approach to an expanded universe because while they’re all witches and wizards, they all still have their prejudices, and ones that are never entirely resolved for the sake of a happy ending, not that Rowling ever 100% buys into that in any book of the series (the question mark just sort of lurks there, you know?).

I could go on and on and on about GoF. I love Pretty Boy Diggory, the good boy in the wrong place at the wrong time. I both love and loathe the shock of his death. I love Sirius Black’s wisdom with its lingering immaturity, slightly unhinged. I adore the Weasleys beyond reason, especially Ron snapping in his jealously, and his and Harry’s stupid, boyish fighting with one another. This is the one and only book where I don’t skim past chapters or encounters that I’m a little indifferent to. When GoF originally was released, I read it four times in succession.

If I could get J.K. Rowling to sign any book of the series for me, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire would absolutely, unquestionably, be the one.
